I am a sucker for the excitement of back-to-school and freshly sharpened pencils. I blame all those years of teaching in public school. But jumping in with both feet doesn’t work well for my kiddos and I learned by trial and error that a slow start fits our family much better than the gung-ho excitement I had been used to.
Unhurried is the word for it. And that one word sums up so much about homeschooling, if you’re willing to embrace it.
We don’t have to get up and rush out the door to school. We enjoy unhurried mornings in our jammies, slow-starting our day.
I didn’t rush my daughter into reading right away. We enjoyed an unhurried love of good literature and cuddled up reading time together.
We don’t overschedule our free time. Quite the opposite, we guard our time and prioritize activities.
I didn’t even rush my son to finish his first year of high school. In fact, he finished his last paper for his last class on August 25th!
Everything slowed down when we started homeschooling. But every day became more precious when we embraced being an unhurried family. I encourage you to try an unhurried life and see what you can gain as a family.
As always, happy homeschooling!
