“When does school start for you?”
Chances are, you’ve already heard this question a few dozen times. I know I have! My answer is always vague … “Sometime this fall” or “Maybe in a few weeks.” We try to keep a year-round rhythm going, so “back-to-school” doesn’t have the same excitement as it might otherwise.
If you feel any pressure to follow the public school calendar, or even the Monday-Friday schedule, don’t give it a minute’s thought! Homeschooling offers creative scheduling freedoms. Take full advantage! The only consideration you need to make is for your state’s regulations around scheduling. Once you know what is required, make your homeschool schedule work for you.
Here are just *some* of the creative scheduling options I have used in the past.
Six weeks off for Christmas.
Starting in July so we could finish in April.
When I worked out of the home, we homeschooled most often on my days off and doubled up lessons if necessary.
I have scheduled lessons in the morning for one child and in the afternoon for another.
When I worked seasonally, we did very light schooling for 5 months and followed a more traditional schedule the remaining 7 months.
Whatever schedule you decide to follow, follow it because it works for you and not because of anyone else’s perceptions of when you should be homeschooling.
