Encouragement “Prioritizing”

Life has a way of interfering with our plans at the worst time. It may be as simple as a flat tire or as serious as a cancer diagnosis (God forbid!). I have one word that can help you homeschool through any inevitable trial that is heading your way: Prioritize.

If you know you have a difficult season coming up – or even just a busy day – set your priorities and forge ahead with a simplified plan.

Your priority can be as simple as reading to your children every day. Anything you can accomplish beyond that is great, but reading to your children should be the only priority for your homeschool until life returns to normal (or as normal as life can be!). This is a priority I recommend often to families under stress. Much can be learned from a read-aloud, but it is the bonding and togetherness that matters most during difficult times.

For older children who are independent learners, priorities may look different. A simple list with subjects arranged in order of importance is a clear way to show your priorities and it serves as an independent guide for your child when you aren’t available.

Flexibility is key here – make your priorities fit your situation, your children, and your schedule.  Think about what each child needs most – for lessons and for peace of mind. Learning will still be happening no matter what choice you make! In fact, your children will be learning a very important lesson from you … how to prioritize time with family when life gets tough!
