Parent or Teacher? Either Way, You Know Best

If I had a dime for every time I heard …

“Homeschooling is okay for you, since you used to be a teacher.”

“How are you certified to teach every subject?”

“Parents don’t know how to teach!”

These comments all come from a place of true ignorance. Homeschooling is a natural extension of parenting, but since there is no one-size-fits-all formula for individual homeschools (the way there is for Public School), those unfamiliar with homeschooling often subscribe to falsities and misconceptions. If you are new to homeschooling, you may still believe some of these false statements, which will affect your confidence in yourself. Here are three reminders to keep in your back pocket if your confidence starts to waiver:

  1. You are an adult. You can learn alongside your child. You can follow a teacher’s manual. You can use additional resources to help you teach unfamiliar concepts.
  2. You ARE a teacher! You choose the curriculum, make the schedule, plan lessons, chaperone field trips, and give grades. Best of all …
  3. You are your child’s first teacher. No one loves your child as much as you do. You know him best and you want the best for him.

Stay confident in your decision to homeschool and in the choices you make. You don’t need all the answers to homeschool your children – you only need to be able to find the answers when you need them. For more support on your homeschool journey, Homeschool Sunshine Coaching is here for you.
